Walmart scrambling to catch Amazon in online retail

A story this week from Bloomberg notes that discount retail giant Walmart is lagging many competitors when it comes to online sales – only two per cent of sales last year were via the web.

Walmart frankly admits it’s in a catchup game in the United States with Seattle’s Amazon, which is rapidly becoming the North America’s online retailer of choice for everything from diapers to diamonds.

Walmart isn’t the only retailer who’s worried – when I spoke recently with Vancouver mobile app developer Mobify, president and CEO Igor Faletski pointed out that any consumer-focused company without an easy-to-use online and digital interface risks losing customers to Amazon.
