The rumours are true: Apple announced at its annual developer’s conference in San Francisco that Apple Pay will be available on mobile and desktop web this fall (among plenty of other exciting news). Previously available only on iOS apps or in-store, it’s poised to significantly increase mobile conversions as it becomes accessible in more countries.
What Is It?
Apple Pay is a secure, single-click payment method that makes converting on mobile and desktop totally seamless. It will replace clunky text fields and time-consuming shipping forms, reducing friction for customers who are increasingly shopping on the mobile web. With Apple’s macOS Sierra continuity enhancements, customers using Apple Pay on desktop use the Touch ID feature on their iPhones to quickly authenticate purchases.
Why You Should Care
Until now, Apple has only offered one-touch payment on native apps, leaving out a huge segment of shoppers as the majority of ecommerce still takes place on browsers. Paypal has so far dominated that space, although time will tell – apps supporting Apple Pay have increased checkout conversion rates as much as 2.5 times. Apple also announced that they are opening up iMessage to developers, as well as integrating Apple Pay into iMessage, meaning customers will soon be able to purchase right inside their conversations – perhaps after a conversation with a chatbot?
