Mobify launches tablet optimization tool for websites

Tablets are finding their way into more homes, and they’re proving to be quite the ecommerce tool, helping boost sales for many retailers better than desktop and smartphones in some cases. But many big sites aren’t optimized for tablets; instead, relying on native tablet apps or just the regular desktop site.

Mobify, a Vancouver, Canada-based startup, is betting that companies are prepared to optimize their websites for tablet use in much the same way many have modified their sites to be consumed on smartphones. The company, which already helps optimize 20,000 websites for mobile phone usage, is releasing a tablet-optimization product that makes it easy for a site to convert to a more tablet-friendly design. Mobify joins other HTML5 publishing solutions like OnSwipe and Pressly that are helping websites optimize for tablets.

Mobify Launches Integrated Mobile and Tablet Optimization Product

Extends mobile commerce through a single framework that optimizes for all devices – tablet, mobile, TV, kiosks and any new web-connected device.

VANCOUVER, BC – Mobify <http://mobify.com/>, a web platform that powers over 20,000 mobile websites, has launched an integrated optimization product is designed to leverage existing websites from any device, including tablet, mobile, kiosks, TVs and any web-connected device.

As the mobile market diversifies and expands, unified access regardless of device will be of increasing importance for e-commerce and multi-channel seller’s mobile commerce strategy.

Mobify’s tablet product enables brands to take advantage of the rapidly growing ‘tablet economy’ by delivering a rich, beautiful, high-performing site for their tablet visitors. According to a Pew Internet study, tablet ownership nearly doubled this past holiday season, reaching 19% of U.S. adults.

Optimizing for tablets allows companies to provide users with faster load times, optimized text and page sizes, and a swipe-friendly interface that takes full advantage of touch-based navigation with tactile image carousels and other widgets. This translates into lower bounce rates, increased conversions, and more community participation across the growing number of tablet users.

“By extending the Mobify Platform to tablets, we’re helping our customers tap into an extremely lucrative opportunity. Tablets have already had a profound impact on mobile commerce and we’re just in the early stages of this tablet economy,” said Mobify CEO, Igor Faletski. “The Mobify platform has a proven 100-day ROI with smartphones and we’re confident we can extend the same to tablets.”

Mobify gives marketers and developers full control over their website on every device, in real-time, and without using external third party proxy servers that scrape and transcode content in shadow sites which create device-dependent dead-ends. The secret is in the Mobify.js JavaScript client-side transformation framework.

Tablet optimization is a natural extension of Mobify’s strategy to deliver a seamless web experience through one domain name no matter the device or operating system.

The JavaScript-based Mobify platform powers some of the largest sites on the mobile web, serving millions of pages a day and reaching 20% of global smartphone subscribers. Customers include Starbucks, Ideeli, Threadless, LuluLemon, Wired, Men’s Health, Teen Vogue, and more.

Apple iOS Now Larger than OSX: Leading the Move to Mobile

In 2011, global mobile data traffic more than doubled for the fourth year in a row, growing 230%.

How has mobile growth in 2012 fared when compared to 2011?

2012 started with a bang with the announcement that Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS, also passed Mac OS in share of web traffic for the first time ever.

We’ve been observing the steady growth of mobile operating systems for years now, but this is a major milestone for mobile web, and in keeping with Morgan Stanley’s prediction that mobile browsing will overtake desktop browsing by 2014.

The message remains the same: mobile is growing fast and is here to stay.

Rapid Adoption

Mobile devices are being adopted astonishingly fast.  Need proof?

Apple sold more mobile devices in 2011 than all the Macs it sold in the previous 28 years.

It is not only Apple that is experiencing incredible growth.  Android devices are selling fast and  currently have 51% of the smartphone market, compared to Apples 23.8%.

However, the market share numbers don’t tell the full tale because iOS makes up a greater percentage of mobile web browsers. What does this mean?

More people own Android devices than iOS devices, but a far greater number of those with iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches use the mobile web and use are heavy users.

Across the 20,000 Mobify-powered mobile sites, iPhone’s made up 44% of traffic, while Android accounted for 37%.

Mary Meeker of Kleiner Perkins captures this incredible growth perfectly, stating that “mobile is ramping up faster than any other technology we have seen in the past.”

In fact, 3x more smartphones are activated every minute than there are babies being born.

So if you’re still wondering if you need a mobile web presence, wonder no longer. Mobile is growing faster than humans!

Mobile Web Growing 8 Times Faster than Web

Imagine if you could drive at 520 miles per hour on the freeway, instead of 65mph.

What if Usain Bolt ran the 100 meters in 1.12 seconds, instead of 9.58?

What if a flight from New York to London took 1 hour, not 8?

These examples demonstrate what life would be life at 8 times its current speed.

We’re wondering aloud what life would be like 8 times as fast because that’s the current speed of adoption of the mobile web – 8 times as fast as web adoption back in the 1990s and early 2000s.

The changes brought about by the first web explosion were staggering.  Amazon, eBay, PayPal, and Google – some of the largest and most recognizable companies in the world – were all products of the initial web boom.

Incumbent businesses that were disrupted by the pace and scale of change during initial web adoption are going to be staggered by the mobile pace and scale of change. It’s going to be 8 times as fast. Whole new companies will be created. Incumbents are going to be caught flatfooted and, before they can react, will be out of business.

Some of the classic web companies may well also ride the current mobile boom, but there’s no guarantees.

The scale of change and adoption is staggering.  64% of  Americans aged 18-34 already have smartphones.

Of those, people who purchased within the past past 3 months, 80% got a smartphone.

In fact, 3 times more smartphones are being activated every minute than there are babies born.

It’s really the pace of change and the scale of change that is going to be breathtaking. And just like during the original web adoption, telling the winners from the losers will be very difficult while we’re in the midst of it.

Remember when Amazon started issuing bonds to finance its operations? Remember Webvan or Pets.com? There’s a whole graveyard of empty promises made during that time and there’s a whole new cabal of billionaires also minted at the same time.

Retailers need to realise that not having a mobile site actually hurts them.

A recent Google survey found:

  • 61% of users said they were unlikely to return to a site if they’d had trouble viewing it on a mobile device
  • 40% said they would actually take the further step of visiting a competitor’s site.

The same survey found that having a mobile  site can increase a web retailer’s consumer engagement by 85% with a mobile site.

Remember when you used to go to a travel agent to book a flight, a hotel and a car rental? The change that put travel agents out of business happened over about 5 years. If mobile adoption is 8 times as fast, will that change happen in less than a year? That’s what the numbers are telling us.
